A recent report from the Quoted Companies Alliance, Norman Broadbent and BDO indicates that many more women are taking on Non-Executive Director roles. Almost a third of all FTSE 100 Non-Execs are women, and a quarter of FTSE 250 NEDs are women.
Although these figures indicate an improvement on the surface, women are still behind in executive director roles. Only 9% of women in FTSE 100 companies hold an executive director role, and this decreases to 5% within the FTSE 250.
New director-general of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn said recently
“It’s fantastic that women are present in boardrooms in greater numbers. But let’s be clear. Non-executive directors and even chairmen attend between four and ten meetings a year. They approve strategy, are guardians of values, challenge decisions and help manage risk. These are important roles, but it is the job of executives to take daily decisions, shape and define strategy, and influence culture through the everyday examples that they set…”
