Our client is an international technology / ecommerce organisation operating in over 20 countries worldwide looking to find a General Counsel to be based in London. The last few years have seen impressive expansion which has driven the company forward and they are looking to expand over the coming years.
The General Counsel position represents a fantastic opportunity for a senior lawyer to assume control of maintaining and developing the in-house legal function. You will require good critical thinking and problem solving outlook with a proven track record. Proven drafting skills are also a must. The successful candidate will work closely with the CEO and executive board and will be a key part of the business.
The key selling points of this General Counsel position is the sheer variety of work you will be involved in. You could be involved in significant commercial contract drafting with a focus on technology, EU investigations, competition and provide critical thinking on important litigation matters. Whilst not looking for a litigator exposure to or a background in litigation /contentious legal work would be of benefit.
You will coordinate the companies approach to data protection and ensure it is in line with upcoming GDPR requirements. You will also provide legal direction in a broad range of other legal matters including intellectual property, corporate structuring, tax planning and employee litigation issues.
You will work with an executive team with wide experience in an environment where you will be encouraged to share your views. It is a professional, but friendly and informal environment, and the people who work there are both driven and enthusiastic.
You will work closely and report directly to the CEO, thereby gaining board level access, enabling you to have valuable strategic input into the continued success of the organisation. Further, you will build relationships across the business, ensuring that the legal department is indispensable to the business.
As General Counsel this position will also involve the management of one other existing member of the legal team. Experience of managing, developing and mentoring people in your current position would be highly advantageous.
The successful candidate will be a senior level Head of Legal, Legal Director or General Counsel, with exceptional private practice training, in-house exposure and a technology focus. Ideally you will have had experience leading an in-house legal function, either as part of a team or as Sole or General Counsel.
You will possess exceptional commercial acumen and communication skills and be comfortable liaising across an international business including with senior management. You will be well versed with technology orientated commercial work, and will be a team player, ready to support different areas of the business.
